FRIDAY MARCH 29TH - Good Friday
It's been another good week of training - my weight is down to 76 now so I'm only 1 kilo off of my original target of 75 - I guess the posts have to shift now to 73-74! The only bummer this week was hurting my thumb in sparring (twice) which caused me to have to take Wednesday off. I'm trialing a new way of wrapping my hands to try and reduce the risk of hand injuries.
For the last 2 weeks I've been eating porridge for breakfast everyday and I have to say it is the best option for energy, feeling full for ages (which helps with weight loss due to less snacking between meals) and cost - it's cheap!
Along with weight loss comes the feeling of being better on my feet - quicker, more agile movement. I don't know that my hand speed has quickened, but that's a constant work in progress. It's so easy to tense up, instead of relaxing which helps with speed and power.
I've been consciously working on weaving my way into my opponent which has by and large worked well: slip left, duck and step forward - but, as Rob pointed out in sparring today I MUST capitalize on it and work once I'm in and not quit unless I need to! My tendency is to get in, throw a punch or two then back straight off. It's the fear of the inevitable retaliation that makes me unconsciously take the 'quit while I'm ahead' route when I haven't even done anything worthwhile! ALL GOOD THOUGH, I know now to to stay inside and work harder. Today I clearly experienced the draining effect of throwing lots of punches - it was likely sub-par fitness and strength mixed with technique deficiencies, I'm not really sure but I'll keep at it...
I'm also going to keep working on constant head movement, footwork and range, pivoting right with an orthodox opponent and left with a southpaw, to be able to get quickly to his outside, with a slight push up top at the same time to turn him away. Also, with Southpaws, to keep my lead foot on the outside of his to be able to shoot the straight right at his head.
Some others from the team were sparring today too- check out the videos below:
